Jennifer’s ordeal

At the time leading up to Dirty Dancing’s premiere, Jennifer Grey and her then-boyfriend, actor Matthew Broderick were vacationing in Europe when they were involved in a horrific car accident. This led to the deaths of 2 women in the other vehicle, while Jennifer and Matthew suffered serious personal injury. Despite this, Matthew’s lawyer managed to get him off on a minor conviction for which he paid a fine. This outraged a lot of people and gave Jennifer some bad publicity during the movie’s premiere. But as they say in Hollywood, even bad publicity is good publicity.
